Maaike Klubnick Hoekstra

Maaike Klubnick-Hoekstra, of Putnam Valley, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2018, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 62. Maaike was born on April 15,1955 in Utrecht, Netherlands, to Jan Piet Hoekstra and the late Anne Riekje Hoekstra. The family moved to Putnam Valley when Maaike was a young child. After graduating high school, Maaike pursued her education at Alfred University's College of Ceramics specializing in pottery and drawing.

On June 16, 1979, Maaike married the love of her life, Dennis Klubnick. They settled in Putnam Valley, and raised three daughters. Together, Dennis and Maaike had the kind of marriage we would all wish for ourselves and our children. Maaike quickly became the village leader in her neighborhood and in the Putnam Valley community. She was an Odyssey of the Mind coach, co-chair of the Family Arts Night, and she helped organize both the Kentasaurus Sculpture and Van Go Art Bus for the Carmel Schools. She taught ceramics for the Putnam Arts Council at the Belle Levine Art Center. She was one of those rare human beings who made everyone she met feel accepted and respected. She was a positive role model for the countless neighborhood children and accepted everyone under her wing and nurtured them, demonstrating through her actions the true meaning of tolerance and love. She was a pillar of support for many friends and family members who would come to her for advice and strength. She offered an abundance of positivity and love and her smile and laugh were contagious.

As the years passed, Maaike’s pottery talents blossomed. She enjoyed spending time working in the pottery studio Dennis built for her, welcoming friends and children to create with her. All those who were lucky enough to receive one of her creations knew they were the recipient of a real treasure. Maaike was instrumental in the founding of the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center. As the Center’s President, she worked tirelessly to bring talented artists and musicians to the Putnam Valley community. Maaike was also an accomplished dulcimer player, and a member of the Peekskill Hollow Kitchen Table Band.

Maaike is survived by her devoted husband Dennis Klubnick, her loving children Coralyn Simone and her husband Adam, Hannale Klubnick and Emmelia Klubnick. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Abigail and Oliver Simone, her dear father Jan Piet Hoekstra and his wife Kate, her dear sister Corrianne Hoekstra and her children Cato, Neeltje and Tobias Blankenstein, and her dear brother Jan Robert Hoekstra, his wife Peggy, and their children Jan Steven and Aine, along with her loving extended family. Maaike was predeceased by her mother Anne Riekje (Jansen) Hoekstra and younger brother Bartje.

Calling hours will be Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 2pm at the family home, 58 Seifert Lane, Putnam Valley. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 3pm at the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center, 729 Peekskill Hollow Road, Putnam Valley.
