Major General Nicholas S.H Krawciw

November 28, 1935 — September 29, 2021

NICHOLAS S.H. KRAWCIW  Major General USA (Ret.)  (1935 - 2021)

Major General Nicholas S.H. Krawciw died peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 2021 in Ft. Belvoir, VA. He was a devoted husband and loving father who served his country to the last. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, before World War II, the family avoided advancing Soviet troops by moving west, eventually emigrating to the United Sta tes. Nick became a citizen and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1959, serving with great distinction in uniform for 31 years. He served two tours in Vietnam, where he was grievously wounded; in the Middle East with the UN during the Yom Kippur War; and in Europe with NATO. He commanded at every level from platoon to division, positions that brought him close to the soldiers he loved. Later, as a civilian working as an advisor to the Secretary of Defense, he helped transition the Ukrainian Army from a Communist organization to one functioning under democratic standards. He is survived by his wife, Christina, his daughter, Alex (and husband Matt), his two sons, Andy (and wife Samantha) and Paul (and wife Kristin); his grandchildren Elijah, Benjamin, Daniel, Annika, and Nicholas; and his sister Maria and brother George. He is pre-deceased by his grandson Kyle Krawciw. Funeral services will be held at West Point. All who had the good fortune to spend any time with Nick received a generous dose of his contagious joy, kindness and boyish glee for life.
